“The Courage to Take One Step” invites us into one of the most familiar and powerful stories in the Gospel of Matthew—the moment when Peter steps out of the boat and onto the water. Peter hears Jesus say, “Come,” and for a moment, he is willing to leave behind what feels safe and familiar and step into the unknown. What happens next is more than a story about walking on water. It is a story about courage, faith, fear, and the willingness to trust something greater than what we can see. Perhaps, like Peter, there are moments in our own lives when we hear that quiet invitation to “Come”—to step beyond what is comfortable, release what no longer serves us, and trust that there is something greater waiting on the other side of our first step.

Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.” “Yes, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?” When they climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped.
